Hunters by Night

By Mandy Pannett

The artist loved birds, changed his name
to Uccello, meaning ‘Bird.’

More than love was his obsession
with perspective, the search for depth.

If his wife called him to bed, he’d answer
dreamily, Oh how lovely this perspective is.

Now follow the hunters into the woods.
A night without stars. No birds

only an owl hooting, only the sound
of the hot-breath panting of hounds.

Hunters converge in the forest
into the vanishing point.

Deeper and darker
into the vanishing point.
